US Military to Take Direct Control of Cyberdefense?
According to DefenseTech.org,
“With U.S. civil and military officials increasingly concerned about cyber attacks against American networks, the U.S. Air Force is planning to establish what will probably be the largest and most comprehensive military organization to defend against cyber attack. And, unlike the apparent efforts of the other U.S. military services in this field, the Air Force will conduct offensive cyber warfare.”
Is this good for all of us internet users? Or is it another way for the government to take control of our lives, and peek in at what we are doing?

Well in practice it is sound, but it seems like it could be taken to far. It does make sense that the Air Force would do this though “to defend the US in Air Space, and Cyberspace…” ring any bells? that is a short piece of the USAF mission statement as I last heard it.
A “Cyber” section (Lets call it CySec for now) for the Air Force does make sense though. I mean, and not to diss or put down the Air Force, they do seem to attract the most Nerds, Geeks, Smart people, call them what you will but you get the idea.
Now-days wars are being fought in cyberspace just as much as on the ground with soldiers and marines. in that sense a CySec would be a good thing to develope.

With terrorism as today’s military’s problem, Im surprised it took them this long to build such an organazation. Terrorism is based on being the underdog and attacking your enemy in anyway possible, to put the populace in fear. Thus the name. All it takes is one hacker to really screw things up for a lot of people, so of course terrorists will attempt to be that hacker. This is a needed organization. And with offensive cyber attacks, it could be a goldmine of information on our enemies.

Although inherently amusing, and even though it does fit, let’s try to remain on the topic at hand shall we?

Well, with that in mind, let me just say that it makes perfect sense for the USAF to spearhead any cyber defense initiatives.
Thank you for the splash of cold water.

But even though it “makes sense”, is it really the best idea? I mean, what’s not to stop them from starting to filter out what we see or hear on the internet on a daily basis? Could they effectively control what we do on the internet, and work it into something like North Korea has done? Or will it be completely as said, for cyberdefense, nothing more.

Does the existence of a well-armed and equipped military, controlled by the government, increase the risk of said military being used against a civilian population? Of course.
Does the existence of a US Department of Education (unconstitutional) increase the risk of federally-mandated curriculum which seeks to brainwash our youth into “acceptable” modes of thinking and reasoning (or give up reasoning for that matter) and create perfect little Subjects for the State? Of course.
Any expansion in government power or authority should be viewed with suspicion, debated, decided, and then receive careful oversight.
Well……actually some would argue that we rarely need any expansion in gov. power, but that’s a different discussion….

well I think you’ve got something there….

As you all may have noticed, we are increasingly relying on technology to do things for us. Even the military is depending on satellites and night vision. This is all different forms of technology. There is no way around it, we will eventually need technology to even survive. It’s getting to the point that the infantry is using leg assists to help them walk longer distances.
We’re stuck, deal with it.
